If your hair is thinning, there are certain hairstyles you should avoid. Thinning hair is caused by a different range of factors, but wearing your hair in the styles listed below will only make matters worse.

Tight ponytails, chignons

Tight ponytails exert a pulling pressure on the hair around the hairline. This pulling pressure causes the hair follicles to become inflamed if the pressure is applied repeatedly. If hair is constantly worn in a tight ponytail, the follicles at the hairline and crown weaken and make it easier for the hair to fall out. If you must wear your hair in a ponytail, make sure it’s not tight.

Hair extensions, especially weaves

Hair extensions are attached in a variety of ways to the scalp. Methods of attaching extensions range from gluing, sewing, clipping, using elastic bands and threads. While they may hide the fact that your hair is thinning, the effect only lasts for as long as you’re wearing them. The temptation to wear extensions is understandable. It is worth bearing in mind that the extension adds pressure on hair follicles wherever and however they are attached. The pressure is caused by the weight of the extra hair and often results in further hair loss. Extensions should generally be avoided and when worn, should only be used for short periods of time. These two hairstyles often lead to inflamed hair follicles because of the immense amount of pressure they place on the follicles all over the head. The hair is braided or woven tightly and this involves pulling the hair. This constant pulling can either pull the hair entirely out of it’s follicle or as mentioned before lead to inflamed follicles. Inflamed or unhealthy hair follicles cannot sustain the hairs that are growing out of them. Like ponytails, repeatedly wearing braids or cornrows can result in patches of hair loss making the hair appear even thinner.

All the hairstyles listed above are contributors to scalp stress and cause damage to hair follicles. This damage is only caused when the hairstyles are worn repeatedly over a period of time. When worn occasionally, they are relatively safe hairstyles. Cornrows and braids which are usually very tight should be avoided altogether if your hair is thinning. Using appropriate products can stimulate the hair growth process leading to thicker healthier hair. A combination of shampoos, topical treatments and appropriate nutrition can reverse hair thinning.
